Frequently Asked Questions

What is personal financial planning?

Personal financial planning focuses on the individual, and all the financial and psychological factors that impact a person's life so as to achieve long term financial security.

How do you know if you need financial planning advice?

People hire financial planners for many reasons. Here are some questions you might ask yourself to determine if you need financial advice:

• Do you have the time to seek personal financial advice from several sources?

• Are you confused about conflicting financial advice from several sources?

• Do you feel you are paying too much tax?

• Are you confused about where to invest your money?

• Do you feel that you can't save any money?

• Can your finances weather the bad times or allow you to take advantage of opportunities?

• Has there been a recent change in your life which could affect your financial future, such as retirement, job change, or an addition to your family?

When I retire, how much will I need?

That depends upon individual needs and desires. Depending upon your desired lifestyle, you may need more or less than the average individual who will generally require 60 to 70% of their pre-retirement annual income.

What investments are the best for me?

That depends upon individual needs and risk tolerance. There are many different investment products (approximately 3,000+ investment funds alone). A financial planner can help you to determine the best choices for your individual situation.

Is the initial Financial Planning consultation free?

While we do not request a member, serving or former, to sign up before releasing detailed information or advice, there are measures in place to protect your "investment" - time and money - in our financial planning service.

We conduct a "discovery meeting" to assess your needs and expectations. We then ascertain our ability to respond to your needs. We outline the steps and processes we would utilize in assisting you and inquire if you feel there is a match between your needs and our solutions. If there is, we proceed. If not, we revisit your needs and review viable options.

What happens if I am posted?

If posted to a location where we offer the Financial Planning service, your file will be transferred to that location and we will continue to offer the same high level of service you expect.

Alternatively, if posted to a location where Financial Planning services are not offered, with your agreement, we can transfer your file to a SISIP FS financial planner in the province you are residing and continue. If this arrangement is not acceptable to you, we will terminate the Financial Planning services effective the first of the month following your effective date of posting.
